The first two editions of the 2025 Tech Needs Discovery (TND) event series have propelled us to a point where we can launch the third edition in a brand new format. Building on the success of first two TND editions

Throughout 2025, the Dutch broker has premiered a new event format to connect the space industry with other sectors in a practical and pragmatic way, which has already been gaining attention across the broader ESA broker network. The Dutch broker’s goal for establishing and curating the Tech Needs Discovery series is clear – to connect non-space and space innovators. This started in March with the broker facilitating connections to first highlight how space tech can help solve non-space challenges (read TND #1 report) and in June saw non-space innovators invited to tackle space challenges (read TND #2 report).

As the series progressed, connections were facilitated between the space sector and relevant non-space industries, including agri-food, energy and high tech. These are among the key focus areas of the ESA Technology Broker NL, linking space solutions to industrial challenges in the Dutch top sectors with a high socio-economic impact. At each session, the broker contacts – Jacobo Domingo and Raoul Voeten – moderated guided matchmaking and informal networking, sparking ideas about how technologies from outside the innovators’ domains can support innovation within them.

Fuelling fresh thinking

“The first two events allowed us to explore presenting tech needs on stage, through an informal discussion, moderated by the broker, and diving deep into the companies’ experiences, perspectives on cross-sector collaborations, as well as the ins and outs of the needs and challenges they faced,” comments Jacobo. “This set the scene for effective matchmaking conversations between said parties, which later on led to a number of post-event collaborations.”

The format has proven to be a success with the March and June editions of Tech Needs Discovery leading to 70+ new cross-sector connections and 10+ active follow-ups and collaborations. Agri-tech innovations featured highly in the successful outcomes of TND #1, for instance: EUSPA made a fruitful connection in the Viscon Group; and Gravity Gardens established an exciting collaboration with Bayer. For TND #2, it was organisations with hardware, software and data-driven technologies answering the call to identify solutions for the needs set out by the space companies who took to the stage (matches included: Xiver with ESA; Enduteq with LioniX International; and Hukseflux with Spherical Systems).

Propelled to the next level for TND #3

The event series now builds on this success and expands to a more interactive format bringing innovators from the space sector together with those from agri-food, energy and high tech to tackle real-world challenges. At the third event TND #3, there will be co-creation of solutions for a myriad of industry challenges from all four sectors.

Attendees will see the space sector not being central this time and, instead, innovators from all four sectors will work alongside each other on the selected topics picked from the submitted industry challenges.

“Space is no longer in centre stage but rather part of a larger community of different sectors coming together to foster innovation. In this context, methodologies from the space industry can help pave the way when it comes to bringing together professionals from different backgrounds to solve together a single problem,” says Jacobo.

Breakout sessions focus on different industry challenges

“We will select one topic per industry, previously submitted by you, the participants. Each one will be assigned the focus for a working group. You’ll join a table, roll up your sleeves, and collaborate to unpack the challenge by exploring innovative solutions and sharing fresh perspectives. After the workshops, one person from each group will present the results on stage.”

This new approach of mixing innovations and technologies from a multitude of domains and applying them to real-world industry challenges of the other sectors is an intriguing one. “These breakout sessions will each focus on one topic from one sector and will be tackled by professionals from all the aforementioned ones. The role of the key broker contacts will be to use our experience in technology transfer and strategic design to support the different groups into co-creating their solutions (i.e. problem identification and ideation, value creation, transfer of technology, business model and plan…),” explains Jacobo further. “We are eager to see what comes to fruition.”

Interactive format for final TND edition of 2025

In advance of the last 2025 TND edition, the success so far of this initiative is evident. “I believe this event series as a whole has cemented the role of ESA Technology Broker NL as a facilitator and connector of industries, mindsets, perspectives and insights across the board,” Jacobo concludes. “We’ll wrap up with drinks and open networking, giving everyone the chance to connect further and discuss follow ups sparked during the working sessions.”

The ESA Technology Broker NL’s event series stepped up a gear at the second event of Tech Needs Discovery (TND) on 5 June. The challenges set out in the deep-dive talks on stage by the space companies made for a stimulating session and engaging discussions ensued. The presenters from the European Space Agency (ESA), 4 Earth 2 Mars, LioniX International and Spherical Systems connected with innovators from other industries to address the technical challenges. Multiple perspectives provided unique responses and resulted in the best matchmaking session yet!

The success of the event was also thanks to the excellent brokering skills of Jacobo Domingo and Raoul Voeten, who are the Dutch broker contacts. Facilitating the transfer of terrestrial innovations into space

The unique TND event series, initiated by the Dutch broker earlier this year and in collaboration with NSO, Holland High Tech and Hi Delta, is an in-person manifestation of the wider role of the ESA Technology Broker network. The series’ launch – which coincides with ESA celebrating 35 years of Technology Transfer in 2025 – allows for regular events that support the broker’s crucial role in bridging the gap between space technology and various industries. It is hoped that the outcome of TND #2 will help solve industrial challenges of space ventures and facilitate the transfer of terrestrial innovations into space.

Each year, ESA’s cutting-edge technologies developed for space missions find new applications on Earth, benefitting daily life. The Dutch broker’s website is a platform for showcasing the available technologies portfolio, highlighting innovations across the Netherlands that are ready-and-waiting for new applications.

The success of TND #2 highlights that Earth innovations can take steps to breaking the final frontier and we hope, one day, will find their way into space.

Dialogue initiated: new space and non-space collaborations incoming

On 5 June at SBIC Noordwijk, it was space companies presenting their technical challenges on stage. The audience of innovators from non-space businesses were on hand to offer fresh solutions. The event certainly sparked discussions and the beginnings of practical collaborations – all exploring how technologies from outside the space domain can support innovation within it.

The report states: “Each of the speakers shared specific needs that reflect wider trends in the sector, from advanced engineering to cross-sector technology transfer. Key topics included high-performance applications, additive manufacturing, thermal management, embedded systems, modular robotics, digital platforms and space qualification of hardware.” The audience heard from:

ESA’s Swarnajyoti Mukherjee (commercialisation officer) highlighted the need for high-performance technologies, ways to bridge terrestrial innovation with orbital applications, and new approaches for cross-sector collaboration.
4 Earth 2 Mars’ Omid Hajishirmohammadi (founder and CEO) shared challenges related to off-grid construction using additive manufacturing, modular robotics for on-site assembly and structural engineering concepts for geodesic shell systems designed for space environments.
LioniX International’s Robert Grootjans (key account manager) is developing sensor modules intended for in-orbit operation and is seeking partners for space-grade packaging and electronics, as well as space qualification processes.
Spherical Systems’ Cenan Al-Ekabi (operations manager) presented challenges in thermal management, simulation tools for accelerating engineering design and the evolution of embedded software systems to meet the complex demands of space missions.

You do not need to be active in the space sector to have something valuable to offer. Companies working in smart systems, additive manufacturing, precision engineering, agriculture, energy suppliers, software, materials science and mobility are especially relevant.

Cross-sector technology transfer

This second edition of TND reflected on the possibilities of advancing technological collaborations. As the event series has progressed, so has the sense of excitement with more opportunities for fruitful discussions during the matchmaking session. The eagerness of the delegates to wait patiently for 1-on-1 meetings with the space speakers allowed for multiple exchanges between the non-space representatives.

Jacobo commented: “I was extremely pleased with the number of attendees and the growing interest in the format. What stood out to me was how participants from such different backgrounds were all excited about contributing to one shared goal – space. This enabled us to look at challenges from multiple angles. The setup became more efficient, and I believe it will lead to better-quality matches.”

This event proved to be the springboard for new ideas and approaches from businesses that haven’t previously considered the space sector. Specific challenges from the European market and ESA were discussed in the first presentation for exploring innovative solutions from non-space sectors. “Fresh insights often lead to innovative breakthroughs, benefitting both the space industry and the broader European economy,” Swarnajyoti (ESA) explained. “If your venture is in robotics, software, advanced manufacturing, or any other relevant area that could add value to the space industry, this event series provides an excellent opportunity to identify spin-in opportunities and foster new collaborations.”

The other presenters were equally enthusiastic. “Our mission aligns closely with the goals of ESA Technology Broker NL and the foundation being built through the Tech Needs Discovery series – to enable cross-sector, cross-border collaboration,” Omid (4 Earth 2 Mars) commented. “We see this as the right platform to bring disruptive initiatives, such as: our Circular Architecture Techniques for modular and adaptive construction, reducing waste and increasing efficiency; and our project to create scalable, affordable and sustainable housing solutions.”

Space ventures manage challenges with non-space expertise

Space companies may already be looking outside the space sector, for instance, to optimise processes. Cenan (Spherical) shared some insights: “Even though we’re building for space, we’re developing like any other tech company, so tools and solutions from other domains can make a big difference – such as finding ways to manage challenges like thermal control or data-heavy simulations.”

For LioniX, the company produces customised modules based on silicon nitrite, for all kinds of application areas – with space being one of them and along with other non-space areas. “We do already have some cross-sector expertise, which means we know how beneficial it is to look somewhere else for an answer rather than just in your own sector,” Robert noted. “For us, the goal is to become more connected to the space industry, for both supplying photonics-based payloads and potential outsourcing space-related expertise.” Now, having created awareness of potential photonics solutions, it will be interesting to see whether non-space technologies that can be used for space-grade packaging and electronics will come from the connections made at the event.

With the momentum of this month’s event, along with the matches made during TND #1 in March, the broker contacts are on hand for further connections and introductions, which is an important part of this event series. Concrete success stories can take a while to come to fruition – the important thing is that dialogue has been initiated. Ultimately, integrating non-space companies into the space sector is key to driving sustainable growth, competitiveness, and resilience in Europe’s evolving technology landscape.”

“Our mission aligns closely with the goals of ESA Technology Broker NL and the foundation being built through the Tech Needs Discovery series – to enable cross-sector, cross-border collaboration,” Omid comments. “We see this as the right platform to bring disruptive initiatives, such as: our Circular Architecture Techniques (CATs&DOG) – for modular and adaptive construction, reducing waste and increasing efficiency; and the Analogue BlueMoon Circular Village initiative – dedicated to creating scalable, affordable and sustainable housing solutions.”

He continues: “We’ve validated key needs and now seek to solve challenges – we hope to hear from innovators in tourism, accommodation, construction, space and local government who are ready to co-create next steps.”

LioniX International

About his involvement in the event, Robert says: “Becoming more connected to the space industry, for both supplying photonics-based payloads and potential outsourcing space-related expertise, is of great interest to us.” Sharing the technical challenges of LioniX will create awareness of potential photonics solutions. “We are particularly seeking new connections relating to innovative non-space technologies that can be used for space-grade packaging and electronics,” he continues.

What is the space industry looking for?

The technology areas that are in demand include:

Omid explains the specific areas that 4 Earth 2 Mars is seeking new connections: “Critical sectors include advanced manufacturing, materials science, structural engineering and energy systems. I’m also interested in seeking out visionary players in housing, infrastructure and systems-thinking for off-grid habitats on the Earth and the Moon.”

Opportunities for existing innovations to find applications in space

ESA’s commercialisation officer Swarnajyoti Mukherjee will be one of the space experts on stage and the topics presented in the deep-dive talk will be key to opening up access to the vast range of opportunities that space affords.

“We already showcased [at the first edition] that space tech does not have to be too unreachable, and that it in fact can help tackle challenges here on Earth. At the first edition of the Tech Needs Discovery (TND) event series last month – organised by the ESA Technology Broker NL in collaboration with Holland High Tech and Hi Delta – the business representatives on-stage spoke about their needs for the likes of emission monitoring, new energy sources, fibre arrays for communication and greenhouse automation. A tech need for one company can be a challenge that is ripe for solving for those innovators with already developed space-related technologies seeking a new application. From agricultural and horticultural to environmental and engineering, the sectors that can benefit from space tech are as wide as the solutions ready to be tapped into. Tech needs from efficiency and automation to sustainability

The transfer of space technologies to benefit life on Earth is at the crux of the Europe-wide ESA Technology Broker network, offering a wide array of practical applications across various industries. These technologies encompass software and hardware solutions incorporating space-derived materials, data compression tools, methodologies, propulsion systems, coatings and sensors. Space solutions turn up in everything from medical devices to sporting equipment, purification systems to quality control measures.

One of the goals of the new-for-2025 Tech Needs Discovery event series is to take a novel approach to creating connections within the Dutch ecosystem. As a technology broker, a key role revolves around identifying promising ideas and supporting space companies in exploring new markets. It was this reason space innovators were specially invited to be in the audience, to engage with the non-space companies presenting – for a chance to get cutting-edge answers outside their usual industries.

Valuable conversations and successful introductions

The inaugural event in March was curated and moderated by the Dutch broker contacts Jacobo Domingo (from SBIC Noordwijk) and Raoul Voeten (from NL Space Campus), who were enthusiastic about the response received.

“The first edition of the Tech Needs Discovery event exceeded expectations, generating over 30 introductions and more than 10 active facilitations, with participants requesting more follow-ups post-event,” comments Jacobo. “Speakers praised the format and execution that enabled surprising and valuable conversations to emerge – even between unexpected matches – proving the power of curated cross-sector dialogue.”

The event was split into three parts – starting with networking, then the presentations and, finally, the matchmaking, when the non-space companies and space innovators could interact with each other to seek solutions.

Deep dives of non-space companies on stage

A total of six non-space companies took to the stage (see the line-up here and the photo gallery covering this session on the NL Space Campus website). The format saw the main broker contact Jacobo interviewing the representatives about their specific tech needs.

There were deep dive takes covering such topics as:

Closing the loop for the re-use of water;
Implementing fibre arrays for optical communication;
Localisation and navigating in a greenhouse;
Integrating satellite insights for transport-related emissions;
Utilising fossil-free fuel for horticulture; and
Extrapolating ecological metrics for the integration of Earth observation data on water quality.

These challenges faced by the non-space companies covered domains such as sustainability, photonics, automation and infrastructure – which offered opportunities for any space companies in the audience with relevant hardware, software and data-driven technologies to identify solutions. The task of exploring how space tech could address the presented challenges followed during the matchmaking session.

Matchmaking and inspiring connections

The matchmaking session connecting the space innovators with the non-space businesses was a highlight of the event, with the success being driven by the curated audience. Jacobo explained: “The main aspect that we knew we wanted was that the companies should be from a good mix of sectors. With this first event’s line-up, we were able to cover all of the four priority sectors that fall under the remit of the broker.”

Participants were provided with ample opportunity for discussion and to exchange ideas and gain new perspectives. These interactions focused on identifying overlaps in capabilities on possible next steps for cooperation – with conversations leading to broader logistics maybe not specifically related to the presented challenges. One match between a presenter and space innovator has led to talks of a follow-up workshop to highlight how remote sensing could offer value to the company’s value chain. Another presenter, Aadesh Shah (strategic innovation engineer at Viscon Group), connected with Charlotte Pouwels (Galileo satellite engineer at EUSPA on behalf of CGI) who identified a workshop that would be of interest, where the option for Galileo OS/HAS applications in greenhouses could be discussed.

Fuelling fresh thinking

About the event, Aadesh (pictured above) commented: “It was very inspiring! It gave us a fresh perspective on how diverse sectors, both space and non-space, are tackling challenges on Earth and beyond-Earth. It was exciting to connect with other startups, companies and innovators who are pushing boundaries and thinking outside the box. For Viscon, working in the agri-food sector, events like these are a spark plug – fuelling fresh thinking and new ways to hack the challenges we face.”

With this momentum, the broker contacts are on hand for further connections and introductions post-event, which is an important part of this event series. Concrete success stories can take a while to come to fruition – the important thing is that dialogue has been initiated.

“Something that stood out for me during the event was how eager all the attendees were to connect to each other and explore opportunities,” explained Jacobo. “At every chance they had, networking and mingling was taking place, and most came to me afterwards to praise having such an open space to connect.”

TECH NEEDS DISCOVERY EDITION #2:

For the next event in this series, the format is switched! On 5 June* at SBIC, it will be space companies presenting their technical challenges – including representatives from ESA bringing some of their own tech needs to the stage. Existing technologies with potential for new applications

It was not only the people at the event that were providing inspiration for space related solutions. Information cards were supplied to attendees representing the entire catalogue of technology descriptions that have been collated by the Dutch broker. Unique cards, colour-coded by sector, include innovation advantages and suggested market applications so the non-space contacts can see the breadth of technologies available. There was interest from one of the participants in Resoniks’ acoustic quality control system that uses acoustic frequency analysis and artificial intelligence (AI) to detect microfractures, weld defects and material degradation in real time. A new connection is in the pipeline!

Recognising the immense potential of space-qualified products and their unique capability to withstand the harshest conditions – from extreme temperatures to radiation – ESA’s broker network underscores the importance of leveraging these technologies for earthly benefits. The broker website’s Technologies section is being regularly updated, also with non-space innovations that could be of interest for space. One of the recent technology descriptions to be highlighted at the event and online is Zander Labs’ neuroadaptive technology that transforms how humans interact with technology and how artificial intelligence (AI) systems are trained.

“Being featured on the ESA Technology Broker platform connects our innovations with industries we haven’t yet partnered with,” comments Jaap van Gent (business director at Zander Labs). “Our Zypher sensors – which process brain activity directly on-device for privacy – were developed with real-world applications in mind. We’re seeing interest from automotive, healthcare and defence sectors, as well as applications for space.” The broker contacts are continually investigating new connections. Division Q – the “gateway to horticulture” for promising technologies and startups working towards a futureproof greenhouse sector. By using its sister company Koppert Cress’s 10-hectare greenhouse as a living lab, Division Q works together to validate new solutions in practice.
MicroAlign – a deep-tech startup developing tech that enables for the first time to optimally connect many densely-spaced fibres to multiport optical components. The tech allows for the manufacturing the ultimate fibre array for photonic innovation.
Priva – a global high-tech company specialising in smart climate control, automation and horticultural technology for greenhouses, vertical farms and buildings. Its hardware, software and cloud-based services help to optimise comfort, yield and energy efficiency.
Reefy – a tech startup that bridges the gap between engineering and ecology and offers solutions that mitigate against sea level rises and coastal flooding. The company utilises hydraulic engineering and marine biology to integrate nature restoration in marine infrastructure projects.
Viscon – a factory automation company in the agri-food sector offering state-of-the-art technology. The company makes food and agriculture processes sustainably profitable, scalable and user-friendly and is active in hatchery and breeding automation, young plant production, and more.

Linking space solutions to industrial challenges is of particular interest to the ESA Technology Broker as it focuses efforts on the sectors on the technological roadmaps that exist at national level and that have a high socio-economic impact: agri-food, energy, high tech and logistics.

“The fact that the companies on stage are actually mixed between different sectors, is an extra bonus. For instance, BigMile is multi-logistics and high tech, Priva is agri and high tech, while Viscon is agri and energy.”

Jacobo continues: “I think the companies presenting are an interesting draw because you’ll have diversity amongst the speakers, but also cover a lot of different areas. I think the needs that they have will be very relevant for a lot of different space companies because we’ll cover from software to hardware to know how – they really are looking for a lot of different things.”

Agronautics workshop gathers expertise from space to soil

The “Agronautics: Merging Space & AgriFood” workshop, held at Wageningen on 22 April 2024, brought together stakeholders from the space and agrifood sectors to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and technology. Organised in collaboration by the ESA Technology Broker NL, agrifood accelerator StartLife and OnePlanet Research Centre, the event showcased space-inspired innovations aimed at advancing farming practices on Earth.

Space farming

Insights into the wonderful world of space farming captivated the audience in the morning session. In order to ensure the long-term viability of settlements on celestial bodies like the Moon or Mars, humanity needs to master the art of cultivating crops in extraterrestrial environments. The B.A.S.E. initiative aims to establish a circular agricultural ecosystem, addressing several complex challenges in space. These challenges include adapting plant growth to lower gravity and airless environments, mitigating the effects of prolonged lunar nights, optimising soil fertility and shielding against cosmic radiation.

To achieve this, a closed research facility in the form of a dome will be developed. Remarkably, this dome won’t solely rely on plants; bees will aid in pollination, while worm hotels will facilitate organic matter composting. Mealworms, in particular, emerge as vital contributors to the circular food system, not only reducing waste but also providing essential amino acids crucial for human health.

The implications of space farming offer potential applications on Earth as well, such as sustainable crop cultivation in arid regions like deserts. Looking forward, the WUR Rethink Food challenge aims to leverage insights from space farming research to innovate terrestrial agriculture. The initiative seeks to inspire participants through a 4-month trajectory spanning January to May 2025. The programme ignites global student enthusiasm for food production on Earth, Moon and Mars. It provides a space where interested students, companies and researchers meet and innovative ideas flourish.

The symbiosis between farming practices on Earth and in space operates in both directions. This entails not only the adaptation of space technology for new terrestrial applications but also the reverse – where terrestrial innovations find application in space. With this notion in mind, several decontamination and sanitation technologies designed to enhance biosafety in farms and the food industry, developed by the HE-FARM consortium, were showcased. Among these innovations a solution to counteract aerosols and airborne microparticles, preventing the spread of hazardous pathogens.

Space food

Transitioning from the celestial fields of space farming, the workshop delved into a more tangible realm – what should we eat during space missions? Spacefood, a German startup making dry fruits and vegetables for space missions, ideal for everyday health, began this journey with a simple question. Why not enjoy our favourite foods, even when far from home? However, the reality of space presents some obstacles. Every crumb and every drop of sauce poses a potential hazard in the microgravity environment. Therefore, the company focuses on dried fruits, packaged in sustainable materials, offering a taste of familiarity without the mess. It is a small, yet significant step towards providing astronauts with nutritious and enjoyable meals that won’t compromise their safety or the efficiency of their missions.

Staying on the food topic, Mag Soar then demonstrated the potential impact of space technology in everyday life. This Spanish company specialises in contactless mechanical systems for the aerospace industry. One of the organisation’s projects – HERMAT (Highly Efficient, Reliable & clean Magneto mechanical ATomiser) – focuses on developing a high-speed, contactless and oil-free magnetic gear for use in the food and pharma industries. Magnetic gears, being oil and lubricant-free, reduce the risks of contamination and so could also be suitable for dairy, chemical, pigment and environmental applications. Powder production from liquid, slurry or suspensions is a critical process in these sectors, demanding quality, safety, product sterilisation, purity and lack of contamination. Centrifugal atomisers are currently the only technology capable of handling liquids of different viscosity and density while selecting powder properties. The HERMAT project seeks to offer an innovative solution to meet these demanding requirements, potentially revolutionising various industrial processes.

From waste to taste

MELiSSA (Micro-Ecological Life Support System Alternative) stands as a European project dedicated to developing circular life support systems for producing food, water and oxygen from mission wastes. Its space technology portfolio, encompassing bio-based economy, circular technology, sustainability, cleantech and life sciences, is overseen by its technology transfer partner, SEMiLLA IPStar. Among the sanitation solutions unveiled during the workshop was the “Pee to Tea” concept. Leveraging the same water treatment system used aboard the International Space Station, this concept transforms urine into potable water. This technology offers cost-effective solutions for processing human waste and generating water and nutrients. The sanitation unit, comprising toilets and washing facilities, converts yellow, grey and black water into clean water and nutrients. The aim is to scale-up sanitation systems converting waste into drinking water for entire communities. The concept has been piloted in a refugee camp in Rwanda and has also demonstrated effectiveness in other settings, such as festivals and football stadiums.

Energy farming

As the European Union aims for climate neutrality by 2050, transitioning to renewable energy sources is essential. Metalot introduces the space-inspired concept of iron powder as a circular energy carrier. Iron powder offers a more compact alternative to hydrogen and boasts cost competitiveness due to its circular nature.

In the Netherlands, the agricultural sector faces a nitrogen crisis, with farmers being major emitters. With iron powder as a renewable energy source, Metalot presents farmers the opportunity to become energy producers as well as food providers. Metalot envisions a future where farmers contribute not only to food production but also to energy generation, offering a sustainable solution to the nitrogen crisis while empowering agricultural communities. Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere poses another significant challenge in our society, contributing to climate change. In fact, reducing emissions alone will be insufficient. Capturing CO₂ from the air is also imperative. Skytree offers technologies to address this issue, capturing CO₂ from the air and storing it for future use. The technology behind this initiative originates from the air filtration systems aboard the International Space Station, where CO₂ is recycled into oxygen, ensuring astronauts have breathable air. This capability turns out to be particularly beneficial for greenhouse farmers who utilise CO₂ to enhance crop growth. By providing a steady supply of CO₂ without price fluctuations, Skytree’s solution mitigates the risks associated with sourcing CO₂ from external suppliers. Currently, greenhouse farmers face uncertainties related to CO₂ shortages and price fluctuations, often influenced by changes in fossil fuel prices. Skytree’s integrated solution for on-site CO₂ capture, storage and supply alleviates these concerns.

Smart farming

OnePlanet Research Center, a collaborative effort between Wageningen University & Research (WUR), Radboud University, Radboudumc and imec, concluded the day by presenting initiatives in precision agriculture. Advancements in sensing technologies and digital applications enable growers to farm efficiently and sustainably, monitoring crop health while minimising the use of chemicals and reducing environmental impact.

To complement remote sensing data, Aardvark Sensing showcased its soil-sensing robot. Traditional soil sampling methods are costly, logistically challenging, and limited by human constraints. The ESA BIC incubatee Aardvark offers a solution with its autonomous robot equipped with satellite navigation, providing high-resolution sensor data at scale. The robots enhance soil monitoring capabilities, surpassing the limitations of manual sampling and offering real-time insights into soil health and composition.

The 3D-printed Aardvark robot boasts several advantages. It is cost-effective, autonomous, capable of performing repetitive experiments, operational in any weather condition, and equipped with its own charging station. With precision positioning accuracy of 1 cm and automatic cloud synchronisation, it is employed for generating high-resolution soil moisture maps, detecting early signs of dike erosion and identifying plant biodiversity. Furthermore, its adaptable payload carrier allows seamless integration of a wide range of sensors, catering to diverse agricultural needs. Wrapping up the Agronautics workshop, one clear takeaway emerges: the principle of ‘no waste’ in space inspires a focus on regenerative systems and circularity. Throughout the presentations and examples showcased, we have seen how space research and technology can directly contribute to sustainability efforts here on Earth. From energy solutions to filtration systems and from food production to preservation, the workshop highlighted practical applications of space-inspired innovations for a greener future. Through collaboration and ingenuity, we are not just exploring space, we are also paving the way to transition to a more eco-friendly way of living.

Launch of the ESA Technology Broker NL website

The Dutch technology transfer programme of the European Space Agency has been given a digital interface. The new website for the joint effort between SBIC Noordwijk and NL Space Campus bridging space technology and terrestrial applications, will serve as a platform to collect success stories and technology transfer initiatives. It was officially announced at ZIE2024, the networking event for South Holland’s technology industry.

Since 2022, the ESA Technology Broker NL has been prioritising several Dutch top sectors, including High Tech Systems and Materials. Just like last year, ZIE provided an excellent occasion to bridge the high-tech and space industries. With various props and sample materials at the exhibition booth, the brokers demonstrated the potential solutions offered by space technologies. Lightweight and strong composite materials, a space inspired cooking pan, and regenerative life support concepts for long-term space missions triggered the interest of many. Passersby were also encouraged to actively participate by submitting technology needs or innovation challenges in the idea box.

The launch of the new website makes active participation even more accessible. In the Technologies section, different space technologies are showcased as tech cards. These cards provide concise descriptions highlighting the unique features of each technology along with potential new applications. With the search filter, users can easily narrow down their options based on areas of interest such as energy or logistics, enabling them to find relevant technologies that could address specific challenges. As the page continues to expand, more technologies from the Dutch space industry will be added. For those who don’t find a suitable technology matching their needs, they can simply share their requirements online with the broker by submitting a technology need.

The website brings examples and new opportunities for technology transfer in one convenient location. Additionally, the Events section highlights upcoming events within the scope of the programme, including external trade shows and innovation conferences, along with workshops and events organised by the broker.

As one of the key events this year, the ESA Technology Broker NL contributed to ZIE2024 with a session on “Pioneering technological solutions applied in everyday life.” For technology to work in outer space, many challenges need to be dealt with. Vibrations during launch, cosmic radiation, weightlessness, temperature extremes, etc. These harsh conditions push both humans and technology to new limits.

“Just think of the cost per kilogram to launch something into space. An astronaut requires approximately 5 kilograms of food, water, and oxygen per day. Without a closed loop system, long term human spaceflight would not be possible. The resulting filter systems and circular technology developed for space missions can also be adapted for use on Earth, contributing to more sustainable living practices.” – Corneel Bogaert
