Building on the success of first two TND editions

Throughout 2025, the Dutch broker has premiered a new event format to connect the space industry with other sectors in a practical and pragmatic way, which has already been gaining attention across the broader ESA broker network. The Dutch broker’s goal for establishing and curating the Tech Needs Discovery series is clear – to connect non-space and space innovators. This started in March with the broker facilitating connections to first highlight how space tech can help solve non-space challenges (read TND #1 report) and in June saw non-space innovators invited to tackle space challenges (read TND #2 report).

As the series progressed, connections were facilitated between the space sector and relevant non-space industries, including agri-food, energy and high tech. These are among the key focus areas of the ESA Technology Broker NL, linking space solutions to industrial challenges in the Dutch top sectors with a high socio-economic impact. At each session, the broker contacts – Jacobo Domingo and Raoul Voeten – moderated guided matchmaking and informal networking, sparking ideas about how technologies from outside the innovators’ domains can support innovation within them.

Fuelling fresh thinking

“The first two events allowed us to explore presenting tech needs on stage, through an informal discussion, moderated by the broker, and diving deep into the companies’ experiences, perspectives on cross-sector collaborations, as well as the ins and outs of the needs and challenges they faced,” comments Jacobo. “This set the scene for effective matchmaking conversations between said parties, which later on led to a number of post-event collaborations.”

The format has proven to be a success with the March and June editions of Tech Needs Discovery leading to 70+ new cross-sector connections and 10+ active follow-ups and collaborations. Agri-tech innovations featured highly in the successful outcomes of TND #1, for instance: EUSPA made a fruitful connection in the Viscon Group; and Gravity Gardens established an exciting collaboration with Bayer. For TND #2, it was organisations with hardware, software and data-driven technologies answering the call to identify solutions for the needs set out by the space companies who took to the stage (matches included: Xiver with ESA; Enduteq with LioniX International; and Hukseflux with Spherical Systems).

Propelled to the next level for TND #3

The event series now builds on this success and expands to a more interactive format bringing innovators from the space sector together with those from agri-food, energy and high tech to tackle real-world challenges. At the third event TND #3, there will be co-creation of solutions for a myriad of industry challenges from all four sectors.

Breakout sessions focus on different industry challenges

“We will select one topic per industry, previously submitted by you, the participants. Each one will be assigned the focus for a working group. You’ll join a table, roll up your sleeves, and collaborate to unpack the challenge by exploring innovative solutions and sharing fresh perspectives. After the workshops, one person from each group will present the results on stage.”

This new approach of mixing innovations and technologies from a multitude of domains and applying them to real-world industry challenges of the other sectors is an intriguing one. “These breakout sessions will each focus on one topic from one sector and will be tackled by professionals from all the aforementioned ones. The role of the key broker contacts will be to use our experience in technology transfer and strategic design to support the different groups into co-creating their solutions (i.e. problem identification and ideation, value creation, transfer of technology, business model and plan…),” explains Jacobo further. “We are eager to see what comes to fruition.”

Interactive format for final TND edition of 2025

In advance of the last 2025 TND edition, the success so far of this initiative is evident. “I believe this event series as a whole has cemented the role of ESA Technology Broker NL as a facilitator and connector of industries, mindsets, perspectives and insights across the board,” Jacobo concludes. “We’ll wrap up with drinks and open networking, giving everyone the chance to connect further and discuss follow ups sparked during the working sessions.”

The ESA Technology Broker NL’s event series stepped up a gear at the second event of Tech Needs Discovery (TND) on 5 June. The challenges set out in the deep-dive talks on stage by the space companies made for a stimulating session and engaging discussions ensued. The presenters from the European Space Agency (ESA), 4 Earth 2 Mars, LioniX International and Spherical Systems connected with innovators from other industries to address the technical challenges. Multiple perspectives provided unique responses and resulted in the best matchmaking session yet!

The success of the event was also thanks to the excellent brokering skills of Jacobo Domingo and Raoul Voeten, who are the Dutch broker contacts. Facilitating the transfer of terrestrial innovations into space

The unique TND event series, initiated by the Dutch broker earlier this year and in collaboration with NSO, Holland High Tech and Hi Delta, is an in-person manifestation of the wider role of the ESA Technology Broker network. The series’ launch – which coincides with ESA celebrating 35 years of Technology Transfer in 2025 – allows for regular events that support the broker’s crucial role in bridging the gap between space technology and various industries. It is hoped that the outcome of TND #2 will help solve industrial challenges of space ventures and facilitate the transfer of terrestrial innovations into space.

Dialogue initiated: new space and non-space collaborations incoming

On 5 June at SBIC Noordwijk, it was space companies presenting their technical challenges on stage. The audience of innovators from non-space businesses were on hand to offer fresh solutions. The event certainly sparked discussions and the beginnings of practical collaborations – all exploring how technologies from outside the space domain can support innovation within it.

EXTRACT OF NL SPACE CAMPUS’ TND #2 REPORT

To get a feel for the atmosphere of the event, see the photos on the NL Space Campus website. The report states: “Each of the speakers shared specific needs that reflect wider trends in the sector, from advanced engineering to cross-sector technology transfer. Key topics included high-performance applications, additive manufacturing, thermal management, embedded systems, modular robotics, digital platforms and space qualification of hardware.” The audience heard from:

• ESA’s Swarnajyoti Mukherjee (commercialisation officer) highlighted the need for high-performance technologies, ways to bridge terrestrial innovation with orbital applications, and new approaches for cross-sector collaboration.
• 4 Earth 2 Mars’ Omid Hajishirmohammadi (founder and CEO) shared challenges related to off-grid construction using additive manufacturing, modular robotics for on-site assembly and structural engineering concepts for geodesic shell systems designed for space environments.
• LioniX International’s Robert Grootjans (key account manager) is developing sensor modules intended for in-orbit operation and is seeking partners for space-grade packaging and electronics, as well as space qualification processes.
• Spherical Systems’ Cenan Al-Ekabi (operations manager) presented challenges in thermal management, simulation tools for accelerating engineering design and the evolution of embedded software systems to meet the complex demands of space missions.

You do not need to be active in the space sector to have something valuable to offer. Companies working in smart systems, additive manufacturing, precision engineering, agriculture, energy suppliers, software, materials science and mobility are especially relevant.

Cross-sector technology transfer

This second edition of TND reflected on the possibilities of advancing technological collaborations. As the event series has progressed, so has the sense of excitement with more opportunities for fruitful discussions during the matchmaking session. The eagerness of the delegates to wait patiently for 1-on-1 meetings with the space speakers allowed for multiple exchanges between the non-space representatives.

Jacobo commented: “I was extremely pleased with the number of attendees and the growing interest in the format. What stood out to me was how participants from such different backgrounds were all excited about contributing to one shared goal – space. This enabled us to look at challenges from multiple angles. The setup became more efficient, and I believe it will lead to better-quality matches.”

This event proved to be the springboard for new ideas and approaches from businesses that haven’t previously considered the space sector. Specific challenges from the European market and ESA were discussed in the first presentation for exploring innovative solutions from non-space sectors. “Fresh insights often lead to innovative breakthroughs, benefitting both the space industry and the broader European economy,” Swarnajyoti (ESA) explained. “If your venture is in robotics, software, advanced manufacturing, or any other relevant area that could add value to the space industry, this event series provides an excellent opportunity to identify spin-in opportunities and foster new collaborations.”

The other presenters were equally enthusiastic. “Our mission aligns closely with the goals of ESA Technology Broker NL and the foundation being built through the Tech Needs Discovery series – to enable cross-sector, cross-border collaboration,” Omid (4 Earth 2 Mars) commented. “We see this as the right platform to bring disruptive initiatives, such as: our Circular Architecture Techniques for modular and adaptive construction, reducing waste and increasing efficiency; and our project to create scalable, affordable and sustainable housing solutions.”

Space ventures manage challenges with non-space expertise

Space companies may already be looking outside the space sector, for instance, to optimise processes. Cenan (Spherical) shared some insights: “Even though we’re building for space, we’re developing like any other tech company, so tools and solutions from other domains can make a big difference – such as finding ways to manage challenges like thermal control or data-heavy simulations.”

For LioniX, the company produces customised modules based on silicon nitrite, for all kinds of application areas – with space being one of them and along with other non-space areas. “We do already have some cross-sector expertise, which means we know how beneficial it is to look somewhere else for an answer rather than just in your own sector,” Robert noted. “For us, the goal is to become more connected to the space industry, for both supplying photonics-based payloads and potential outsourcing space-related expertise.” Now, having created awareness of potential photonics solutions, it will be interesting to see whether non-space technologies that can be used for space-grade packaging and electronics will come from the connections made at the event.

With the momentum of this month’s event, along with the matches made during TND #1 in March, the broker contacts are on hand for further connections and introductions, which is an important part of this event series. Concrete success stories can take a while to come to fruition – the important thing is that dialogue has been initiated. “Our mission aligns closely with the goals of ESA Technology Broker NL and the foundation being built through the Tech Needs Discovery series – to enable cross-sector, cross-border collaboration,” Omid comments. “We see this as the right platform to bring disruptive initiatives, such as: our Circular Architecture Techniques (CATs&DOG) – for modular and adaptive construction, reducing waste and increasing efficiency; and the Analogue BlueMoon Circular Village initiative – dedicated to creating scalable, affordable and sustainable housing solutions.”

He continues: “We’ve validated key needs and now seek to solve challenges – we hope to hear from innovators in tourism, accommodation, construction, space and local government who are ready to co-create next steps.”

LioniX International

About his involvement in the event, Robert says: “Becoming more connected to the space industry, for both supplying photonics-based payloads and potential outsourcing space-related expertise, is of great interest to us.” Sharing the technical challenges of LioniX will create awareness of potential photonics solutions. “We are particularly seeking new connections relating to innovative non-space technologies that can be used for space-grade packaging and electronics,” he continues.

What is the space industry looking for?

Of the contacts ESA is seeking to make, Swarnajyoti says: “From a broader market perspective, I’m particularly interested in connecting with innovators from sectors, such as advanced manufacturing, materials science, robotics, biotech, artificial intelligence and any industry that can bring value to the space industry. These industries offer substantial opportunities for cross-sector collaboration and have the potential to strengthen Europe’s global competitiveness.”

Omid explains the specific areas that 4 Earth 2 Mars is seeking new connections: “Critical sectors include advanced manufacturing, materials science, structural engineering and energy systems. I’m also interested in seeking out visionary players in housing, infrastructure and systems-thinking for off-grid habitats on the Earth and the Moon.”

Tech needs from efficiency and automation to sustainability

The transfer of space technologies to benefit life on Earth is at the crux of the Europe-wide ESA Technology Broker network, offering a wide array of practical applications across various industries. These technologies encompass software and hardware solutions incorporating space-derived materials, data compression tools, methodologies, propulsion systems, coatings and sensors. Space solutions turn up in everything from medical devices to sporting equipment, purification systems to quality control measures.

One of the goals of the new-for-2025 Tech Needs Discovery event series is to take a novel approach to creating connections within the Dutch ecosystem. As a technology broker, a key role revolves around identifying promising ideas and supporting space companies in exploring new markets. It was this reason space innovators were specially invited to be in the audience, to engage with the non-space companies presenting – for a chance to get cutting-edge answers outside their usual industries.

Valuable conversations and successful introductions

The inaugural event in March was curated and moderated by the Dutch broker contacts Jacobo Domingo (from SBIC Noordwijk) and Raoul Voeten (from NL Space Campus), who were enthusiastic about the response received.

The event was split into three parts – starting with networking, then the presentations and, finally, the matchmaking, when the non-space companies and space innovators could interact with each other to seek solutions.

Deep dives of non-space companies on stage

A total of six non-space companies took to the stage (see the line-up here and the photo gallery covering this session on the NL Space Campus website). The format saw the main broker contact Jacobo interviewing the representatives about their specific tech needs.

Matchmaking and inspiring connections

The matchmaking session connecting the space innovators with the non-space businesses was a highlight of the event, with the success being driven by the curated audience. Jacobo explained: “The main aspect that we knew we wanted was that the companies should be from a good mix of sectors. With this first event’s line-up, we were able to cover all of the four priority sectors that fall under the remit of the broker.”

Participants were provided with ample opportunity for discussion and to exchange ideas and gain new perspectives. These interactions focused on identifying overlaps in capabilities on possible next steps for cooperation – with conversations leading to broader logistics maybe not specifically related to the presented challenges. One match between a presenter and space innovator has led to talks of a follow-up workshop to highlight how remote sensing could offer value to the company’s value chain. Another presenter, Aadesh Shah (strategic innovation engineer at Viscon Group), connected with Charlotte Pouwels (Galileo satellite engineer at EUSPA on behalf of CGI) who identified a workshop that would be of interest, where the option for Galileo OS/HAS applications in greenhouses could be discussed.

Fuelling fresh thinking

About the event, Aadesh (pictured above) commented: “It was very inspiring! It gave us a fresh perspective on how diverse sectors, both space and non-space, are tackling challenges on Earth and beyond-Earth. It was exciting to connect with other startups, companies and innovators who are pushing boundaries and thinking outside the box. For Viscon, working in the agri-food sector, events like these are a spark plug – fuelling fresh thinking and new ways to hack the challenges we face.”

With this momentum, the broker contacts are on hand for further connections and introductions post-event, which is an important part of this event series. Concrete success stories can take a while to come to fruition – the important thing is that dialogue has been initiated.

“Something that stood out for me during the event was how eager all the attendees were to connect to each other and explore opportunities,” explained Jacobo. “At every chance they had, networking and mingling was taking place, and most came to me afterwards to praise having such an open space to connect.”

Existing technologies with potential for new applications

Recognising the immense potential of space-qualified products and their unique capability to withstand the harshest conditions – from extreme temperatures to radiation – ESA’s broker network underscores the importance of leveraging these technologies for earthly benefits. The broker website’s Technologies section is being regularly updated, also with non-space innovations that could be of interest for space. One of the recent technology descriptions to be highlighted at the event and online is Zander Labs’ neuroadaptive technology that transforms how humans interact with technology and how artificial intelligence (AI) systems are trained.
