High-Speed Free-Space Optical Communication for Point-To-Point Communication and SatCom

Reference: TD-NL-1010

Technology description

The Celestia STS optical modem is a data handling and processing unit with optical capabilities, designed to receive and transmit high-speed data over a free space optical laser link to and from space. The market for free space optical communication is growing and this modem can be adapted for communication between airborne vehicles, ships or directly to space. Customers can use the system in secure optical link applications, such as: terrestrial point to point links (between buildings, offices, etc.); maritime links (between oil platforms or ships, etc.); airborne optical links (drones or airplanes, high-altitude pseudo satellites, etc.); and space (from any of the above to a spacecraft). Since the unit is FPGA-base, any processing protocol that is requested by the customer can be implemented. Baseline standards for optical communications in space include the CCSDS and SDA standards.

Innovative Aspects

  • Integration into existing systems, such as optical ground stations, airborne or maritime applications, or in lab testing
  • High level of modularity and adaptable to different ecosystems for a wide selection of data processing architectures
  • Integrates into the Celestia standard control and monitoring system
  • Enables collection of logs and statistics for user characterisation of throughput optical performances
  • Raw-data ingest extension that enables the high-speed acquisition and storage of raw data bits before processing
  • The system can be delivered with an optical transmitter and receiver
